How We Review Gear

A lot of gear sites imply a lab and a shelf of units they’ve personally run for months. We don’t have that, and we won’t pretend we do. This page explains exactly what we doinstead — so you can judge our recommendations for what they are, and check our work.

What we do

1. We compile the published specifications.For every product, we read the manufacturer’s own spec sheet and listing — sensor size, resolution, video modes, weight, mount, connectivity, class ratings — and record where and when we read them. Each product’s review links to the source it was read from.
2. We do the buyer-relevant math.Specs only matter in context. We translate them into what they mean for you: whether a card’s speed class keeps up with a camera’s 4K bitrate, whether a lens’s focal length suits portraits on your sensor, whether a light’s output fits your room. That reasoning is on the page, not hidden.
3. We rank for the buyer, not the commission.Where a cheaper or simpler option is the smarter buy for most people, that’s our top pick — even when a pricier product would earn us more. We say plainly when to spend more and when to save.
4. We show live, dated prices.Every price on the site is pulled from a daily automated check of the retailer and carries the date it was pulled. If that check stops running, the price disappears rather than going stale — the failure mode is silence, not a wrong number.
5. We call out what a brand won’t tell you.When a manufacturer doesn’t publish a figure, we say so rather than guessing. What a brand hides is information too.

What we don’t do

• No test lab.We do not run controlled lab measurements, and we never present spec-reading as if it were lab testing. Sites like RTINGS and Digital Camera World do genuine lab work — we’d point you to them for that, not imitate it.
• No fake hands-on claims.We do not own most of the gear we write about, so we do not claim to have tested it. Where a genuine first-hand impression exists, we state it specifically; where it doesn’t, we don’t manufacture one.
• No paid placements. No brand pays to appear, to rank higher, or to get a better verdict. We accept no free units in exchange for coverage.
• No fabricated reviews or ratings.There are no invented testimonials, star ratings or “in our testing” results anywhere on this site. If we can’t source it, it isn’t here.

Why this is worth something

“You didn’t test it, so why trust you?” is a fair question. The answer: analytical, buyer-side synthesis is a real and useful form of expertise, and it’s one we can do honestly. We read the specs you don’t have time to, cross-check the claims, run the math that decides whether a product fits your use, and surface the trade-off the marketing skips. That’s checkable — every spec traces to a source, every price to a live check — and it’s more useful to a buyer than a borrowed credential.

Keeping it current

Gear gets discontinued and prices move, so we review our main guides regularly: are the picks still sold? Are the prices live? Has a newer model shipped? We update the “last updated” date only when something genuinely changes, and we log corrections per our editorial policy. Spot something out of date or wrong? Tell us— we’ll fix it.
