Ring light or key light?

A ring light is the easiest option for front-on, flattering light, and it’s great for beauty and talking-head content. But the flat, straight-on look isn’t always the most cinematic — if you want light you can shape and angle, a key light or a video lighting kit gives you more control. Many creators start with a ring and add a key light later.

Whatever you choose, position matters more than power: a ring light works best fairly close and slightly above eye level. Pair it with a good microphone and you have the core of a clean desk setup.

What size ring light should I get?

For a floor stand lighting your whole upper body, an 18-inch ring gives the softest, most flattering light. For a desk that lights just your face on calls, a 10- to 12-inch ring is tidier and enough. Bigger is softer but bulkier.

Are cheap ring lights any good?

For phone creators and video calls, yes — a budget ring light is a genuine upgrade over ceiling lighting. The compromises are a flimsier stand and slightly less accurate color. For serious video, a key light with a softbox does more.

Ring light or softbox — which is more flattering?

Does CRI matter on a ring light?

Yes. CRI (color rendering index) measures how accurately a light shows colors, especially skin tones. Look for CRI 95 or higher — the desk model in this guide rates CRI 97+, which is why faces look natural rather than slightly green or washed out.

Where should I position a ring light?

Fairly close to you, at or just above eye level, with the camera in the middle of the ring or just below it. Too far away and it loses its softness; too low and it lights you from underneath unflatteringly.
