Photographing the night sky feels like it should require serious, expensive equipment. It doesn’t. The single biggest factors in a good astro shot are a dark location and a little patience— not the price of your camera. - A camera with manual mode.You need to be able to set aperture, shutter speed and ISO yourself, because the camera’s automatic modes have no idea what to do with a black sky and a few points of light. Almost any interchangeable-lens camera qualifies, and so do many compacts. - Wide aperture (low f-number).Open the lens as wide as it goes — the smallest f-number it offers. This is the single most effective way to let more starlight reach the sensor, which is why a fast lens matters so much.
- High ISO.ISO controls how strongly the camera amplifies the light it captures. At night you’ll push it far higher than you would by day — often into the thousands — to make faint stars visible. So a wide lens gives you a longer allowable exposure, while a more zoomed-in lens forces a shorter one.
Treat this as a starting point, not a law. It’s an approximation, and how picky you should be depends on how large you’ll view the final image and how sharp you want the stars. “Astrophotography” covers several very different photos, and each wants a slightly different approach.

The habits that make or break the shot
A few practices matter as much as any setting, and they’re easy to overlook when you’re standing in the cold and dark.
- Find a genuinely dark sky.This is the one that changes everything. Light from towns and cities scatters through the air and drowns out the stars, so the further you get from it, the more you’ll see. A modest camera under a truly dark sky beats an expensive one in a bright suburb, every time.
- Focus manually, to infinity.Autofocus can’t find anything to grab onto in the dark, so switch to manual focus.
