When people shop for a camera, they usually compare bodies — this sensor, that autofocus, how it feels in the hand. But there’s a quieter decision hiding inside every body you pick up: its lens mount. The mount decides which lenses you can use, and because good lenses outlast camera bodies, it’s often the most important choice you make. This guide explains what a mount is, why lenses aren’t interchangeable across brands, and how to avoid buying into a system that can’t give you the lenses you want.

What a lens mount actually is

A lens mount is the connection point where a lens attaches to the camera body. It’s two things at once. First, it’s a physical interface— a bayonet fitting of a specific size and shape that the lens twists into and locks onto. Second, it’s an electronic interface— a ring of metal contacts that lets the body and the lens communicate. Through those contacts the camera drives the lens’s autofocus motor, sets the aperture, reads what focal length you’re at, and coordinates stabilization. So a mount isn’t just a hole the lens sits in; it’s a handshake between two computers.

Because both the shape and the electronics are specific, each mount is a closed standard. A lens built for one mount physically won’t twist onto a different one, and even if it did, the electronics wouldn’t speak the same language. That’s the single most important thing to understand as a beginner: lenses are mount-specific. You cannot simply put any lens on any camera.

Why lenses aren’t interchangeable across brands

Every major camera maker designs its own mount and keeps it proprietary. That’s partly engineering — different bodies and sensors want different dimensions — and partly business, because once you own a few lenses for a given mount, switching brands means replacing all of them. This is why photographers talk about being “in the Sony system” or “in the Canon system.” The body is replaceable; the collection of lenses is the real investment, and it only works with one mount.

The practical upshot: when you buy a camera, you’re not just buying that body. You’re buying a ticket into a whole ecosystem of lenses, both from the camera maker and from third parties who make lenses for that mount. Some ecosystems are huge and offer lenses at every price; others are smaller or lean expensive. That difference matters more over time than almost any single spec on the body.

The major current mirrorless mounts

Today’s cameras are mostly mirrorless, and the current mounts are the ones worth knowing. Here are the main ones and who uses them:

  • Sony E— Sony’s mirrorless mount, used across both its APS-C and full-frame bodies. It has been around long enough to have one of the widest lens selections, including many third-party options.
  • Canon RF— Canon’s mirrorless mount for its APS-C and full-frame bodies. It replaced Canon’s older DSLR mount on new cameras.
  • Nikon Z— Nikon’s mirrorless mount, again spanning APS-C and full-frame bodies, and the successor to Nikon’s DSLR mount.
  • Fujifilm X— Fujifilm’s APS-C mirrorless mount. Fujifilm focuses on APS-C here rather than full-frame, and pairs it with a well-regarded line of lenses.
  • Micro Four Thirds— a shared mount used by Panasonic and OM System (formerly Olympus). Because two makers use the same mount, their lenses and bodies are broadly cross-compatible, and the smaller sensor keeps the gear compact.
  • L-mount— an alliance mount shared by multiple companies, including Panasonic, Leica and Sigma, on their full-frame bodies. Like Micro Four Thirds, its appeal is that several brands build lenses and bodies for the same mount.

The two “alliance” mounts — Micro Four Thirds and L-mount — are the exception to the one-brand rule. Because more than one company builds for them, you can mix bodies and lenses across those brands within the same mount. The single-brand mounts (Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z, Fujifilm X) don’t work that way, though third-party lens makers do produce lenses for several of them.

APS-C vs full-frame within the same mount

Here’s a point that trips up beginners. Some mounts — like Sony E, Canon RF and Nikon Z — are used on both smaller-sensor APS-C (crop) bodies and larger-sensor full-framebodies. To match, lens makers sell two kinds of lenses on those mounts: full-frame lenses that project a large enough image to cover the big sensor, and crop-specific lenses designed only to cover the smaller APS-C sensor. You’ll see these crop lenses branded as Canon RF-S, Nikon DX and Sony E APS-C.

The compatibility rules are simpler than they sound. A full-frame lens fits and works normally on a crop body of the same mount — it just shows a tighter field of view because the smaller sensor sees less of the image. Go the other way, and a crop lens mounted on a full-frame body of the same mount usually pushes the camera into a cropped shooting mode, since the lens doesn’t throw a big enough image to fill the full sensor. So the general guidance is: crop lenses are made for crop bodies, but full-frame lenses are the flexible option that fit both. If you think you might move up to full-frame later, buying full-frame lenses on that mount protects your investment.

Adapters: the useful escape hatch, with limits

Adapters are small rings that sit between a body and a lens from a different mount, letting you use a lens the body wasn’t built for. The most common and reliable use is adapting a brand’s own older DSLR lensesonto its newer mirrorless bodies. Canon, Nikon and Sony all made this transition, and each offers a first-party adapter for its old DSLR glass. Because the maker designed the adapter for its own lenses, this usually works well — autofocus, aperture control and stabilization mostly carry over.

The caveats grow as you move further from that ideal. Cross-brand adapting — say, one maker’s lens on another maker’s body — and third-party adapters can be far less dependable. Autofocus may be slower or hunt more, some automatic features can stop working, and a few combinations only support manual focus. Adapters also add a little bulk. The honest way to treat adapting is as a bonusfor lenses you already own, not as a strategy for a system you’re buying into. Don’t pick a camera on the assumption you’ll adapt your way to the lenses you want; buy into a mount that already has them natively.

The practical takeaway

The big lesson is that choosing a camera is choosing a lens system. The body you pick locks you into a mount, and that mount determines every lens you’ll be able to use easily for years. Before you buy a body, work out the two or three lenses you’ll actually want — maybe a portrait lens, a wide lens, a travel zoom — and check that they exist for that mount at prices you can live with.
