Metering Modes Explained: How Your Camera Reads Light
How your camera decides on an exposure, why it gets fooled by very bright or dark scenes, and which metering mode to use when.
Every time you half-press the shutter, your camera measures the light in front of it and suggests an exposure it thinks will look right. That job belongs to the light meter, and the metering mode is simply how you tell the camera which part of the frame to pay attention to. Most of the time the meter is quietly brilliant. But it works from one big assumption, and when a scene breaks that assumption your photos come out too dark or too bright for no obvious reason. Once you understand what the meter is doing and how the modes differ, you can trust it when it is right and step in the moment it is wrong.
What a light meter actually does
Your camera cannot see color and beauty the way you do. It sees brightness. The built-in meter reads the light coming through the lens, adds it up, and works out a combination of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO that should record that brightness as a well-exposed image. The important thing to understand is that the meter only measures light and offers an opinion. It does not know what you are photographing or what mood you want. It is a very fast, very literal assistant, and like any assistant, it follows a rule that is usually helpful and occasionally gets you into trouble.
The trap: everything averages to middle gray
Here is the assumption that runs the whole system. Your meter expects the average brightness of a scene to work out to a medium tone, often called middle gray or 18 percent gray. That is a sensible guess, because if you blended together all the tones in a typical photo — some bright, some dark, plenty in between — you would land somewhere in the middle. The problem shows up when a scene is not average.
Point the camera at a snowy field and the meter sees a frame full of bright white. It assumes that brightness should be middle gray, so it cuts the exposure to darken it, and your snow comes out a dull, dingy gray. Point it at a black cat on a dark couch and the meter sees mostly shadow. It assumes that should be middle gray too, so it adds light, and your black cat turns a washed-out charcoal. The meter is not broken. It is doing exactly what it was told, on a scene that does not average out to the middle.
Evaluative, matrix, and multi metering
This is the mode your camera ships with, and it goes by different names: evaluative on Canon, matrix on Nikon, multi or ESP on other brands. They all do the same thing. The camera splits the frame into many small zones, measures the brightness of each one, and combines them into a single balanced exposure. Many cameras also give extra weight to the area around your active focus point, on the reasonable theory that whatever you focused on is your subject.
For the vast majority of everyday shooting — travel, family, landscapes, street, most portraits — this is the mode to leave selected. It is smart, it handles mixed light well, and modern versions are genuinely good at reading a scene. Think of it as your default and only reach for another mode when you have a specific reason.
Center-weighted metering
Center-weighted metering still reads most of the frame, but it gives the greatest importance to the middle and fades out toward the edges. It ignores your focus point and always favors the center, which makes it predictable. You know exactly where the camera is looking every time.
That predictability is why some photographers like it for classic portraits and any situation where the subject sits in the middle of the frame. It is a middle ground between the whole-frame intelligence of evaluative metering and the pinpoint precision of spot metering, and it was the standard mode on film cameras for decades.
Spot and partial metering
Spot metering is the specialist. Instead of reading the whole scene, it measures a tiny circle — often just a few percent of the frame, usually at the center or linked to your focus point — and ignores everything else. This is exactly what you want when your subject fills only a small part of a high-contrast scene and the rest of the frame would otherwise fool the meter.
- A backlit face, where a bright window or sky behind the person would push the meter to darken the whole shot.
- A performer on a dark stage lit by a single spotlight.
- The moon, a small bright disc surrounded by a huge black sky.
- Any subject that is much brighter or much darker than its surroundings.
Partial metering is Canon’s in-between option: it works like spot but reads a larger central area, roughly 6 to 10 percent of the frame. It is more forgiving than a true spot when your subject is a bit bigger, such as a face that takes up a decent chunk of the frame but still sits against a distracting background.
How metering works with your shooting mode
Metering and your exposure mode are two different dials, and it helps to see how they interact. In the automatic and semi-automatic modes — Auto, Program, Aperture Priority, and Shutter Priority — the meter is in charge of exposure. It takes its reading, applies your chosen metering mode, and sets the shot for you. Change the metering mode and you directly change how bright or dark those automatic photos come out.
In manual mode the relationship flips. You set the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO yourself, so the meter no longer decides anything. What it still does is advise: it shows a scale in your viewfinder with a marker that tells you whether the camera thinks your current settings are under, over, or on target. Fixing the meter when it gets it wrong
You do not have to switch metering modes every time the meter stumbles. In the automatic and priority modes, the fastest fix is exposure compensation: a dial that tells the camera to make the shot brighter or darker than the meter suggested. Snow scene looking gray?
