This is the classic “do I need full-frame?” question, with two Sonys that share the same E-mount. The a6400 is the APS-C value workhorse: sticky autofocus, a viewfinder, weather sealing and excellent oversampled 4K in a small, affordable body. The a7 III is the full-frame classic that made the format mainstream: a bigger sensor for cleaner low-light images and shallower depth of field, plus in-body stabilization and dual card slots — in a larger, pricier body.

Because both use E-mount, many lenses cross over (with the crop caveat), so the decision really is about the sensor and what it buys you. For most people APS-C is plenty; for low-light and paid work, full-frame earns its keep. Here’s how they compare.

Buy the Sony a6400 ifvalue, size and everyday versatility matter most. Do I really need full-frame, or is the a6400 enough?

For most people, the a6400 is enough. Full-frame like the a7 III mainly helps in low light and for shallower depth of field, and it costs more in money and size once you add full-frame lenses. If you shoot in good light, share online or make modest prints, the a6400's APS-C sensor produces images most people can't tell apart - and the savings buy better glass.

How much better is the a7 III in low light?

Noticeably, because a full-frame sensor gathers more total light than an APS-C one, so it holds cleaner detail at high ISO. In a dim room or at night the a7 III will look cleaner and let you push ISO further. In good light the gap shrinks to very little, which is why low-light work is one of the clearest reasons to choose full-frame.

Can I use the same lenses on both?

Partly. Both use the Sony E-mount, so full-frame (FE) lenses work on both - fully on the a7 III and with the APS-C crop on the a6400. APS-C E-mount lenses fit the a7 III but only in a cropped mode that uses part of the sensor. In practice, buy FE lenses if you think you'll move to full-frame later, and APS-C lenses if you want to keep the a6400 kit small and cheap.

Which has in-body stabilization?

Only the a7 III, which has 5-axis in-body stabilization (IBIS) that helps for handheld video and low-light stills. The a6400 has no IBIS and relies on stabilized lenses, which is part of how it stays smaller and cheaper.
