What the numbers actually mean

This ultra-wide, letterboxed frame is what gives movies their sweeping, epic feel, and creators often add those black bars to a 16:9 video to borrow a bit of that cinematic mood. It works beautifully for wide landscapes and dramatic scenes, but it comes at a cost: you’re slicing a lot of height off the frame, so there’s far less room for tall subjects.
