HDR Photography: A Practical Guide

What HDR really is, how to shoot and blend exposure brackets for scenes that are too contrasty for one shot, and how to keep the result looking natural.

Some scenes are simply too contrasty for a single photo. Point your camera at a bright sky above a dark stand of trees, or into a room with a sunlit window, and one exposure forces a compromise — either the sky blows out to white or the foreground sinks to black. HDR, short for high dynamic range, is the answer to that problem: instead of one compromised frame you take several at different exposures and blend them so the final image holds detail everywhere. What HDR actually means

Dynamic rangeis the distance between the darkest shadow and the brightest highlight a scene contains, measured in stops of light. Your eyes handle an enormous range at once; a camera sensor handles far less. When a scene’s range fits inside what the sensor can record, one exposure captures it cleanly. When it doesn’t, something has to give. Meter for the bright sky and the shadows go black; meter for the shadows and the sky turns to featureless white. Neither is a faithful picture of what you saw.

HDR sidesteps that ceiling. Rather than asking one frame to do the impossible, you capture the same scene at several exposures— a darker one that preserves the highlights, a brighter one that opens the shadows, and usually a middle one at the metered value — and then merge them. The finished photograph draws its bright areas from the darker frame and its dark areas from the brighter frame, so it holds detail from the deepest shadow to the brightest highlight in a single image. That is all HDR is: a way to record more range than one shot can hold.

Exposure bracketing: the frames you shoot

The set of frames you capture is called an exposure bracket. The classic bracket is three shots: one at the exposure your camera meters, one darker to save the highlights, and one brighterto rescue the shadows. Those extra frames are usually spaced one or two stops apart, so a two-stop bracket gives you a normal frame, one two stops down, and one two stops up. For a scene with punishing contrast — shooting straight into the sun, say — you can widen the bracket to five or seven frames to cover the full range.

The point of the bracket is coverage. Somewhere across those exposures, every part of the scene is recorded well: the highlights are held in the darkest frame, the shadows are clean in the brightest, and the midtones sit in the metered one. Once you have that coverage, blending is mostly a matter of letting the software pick the best-exposed version of each area. Get the bracket wrong — too few frames, or too little spacing — and no amount of processing can conjure back detail that was never captured.

How to shoot a clean bracket

The fastest way to shoot a bracket is auto exposure bracketing (AEB), a mode on nearly every camera that fires the sequence for you at the spacing you set. Turn it on, choose the number of frames and the stops between them, and one press captures the whole set. The key rule while shooting is to let only the shutter speed changebetween frames — keep the aperture and ISO fixed. Holding the aperture steady keeps depth of field identical across the bracket so the frames align, and holding the ISO steady keeps noise consistent. If the aperture drifted the sharp zone would shift frame to frame, which is exactly what you don’t want when the software tries to line them up.

Put the camera on a tripod so the frames stay in perfect register, and trigger the shot with a 2-second timer or a remoteso pressing the button doesn’t nudge the camera. One caveat: HDR assumes the scene holds still between frames. If the subject is moving — blowing branches, traffic, people, rippling water — shoot the burst as fast as you can, or accept that a single frame may serve you better than a bracket full of ghosting.

Blending the frames

Once you have the bracket, you combine the frames into one image. The usual route is HDR merge software— the feature built into Lightroom, the Merge to HDR command in Photoshop, or a dedicated app. You select the frames, the software aligns them (correcting small shifts if you handheld), and it combines them into a single file that carries the full range, then maps that range down to something a screen or print can show. Lightroom’s version keeps the result as a RAW-like file you can keep editing, which makes it easy to fine-tune afterward.

You can also blend by handwith layer masks: stack the exposures in an editor and paint in the well-exposed sky from the darker frame or the open shadows from the brighter one. It takes longer but gives you total control and often the most natural look, which is why it’s common in real estate and architectural work. And for scenes with only moderate contrast you can skip multiple frames entirely and create a “faux-HDR”from a single RAW — simply lift the shadows and pull back the highlights in the develop sliders. If the range is small enough for one file to hold, that’s the cleanest path of all.

Keep it looking natural

HDR earned a bad reputation for a reason: the overcooked look. You’ve seen it — glowing halos rimming every roofline, grungy over-textured midtones, and colors cranked past anything real. That look comes from pushing the tone mapping and local contrast far too hard, not from the technique itself. The goal of HDR is a believable image, one that simply shows the scene the way your eye took it in, not a surreal painting.

To stay on the right side of the line, keep the adjustments restrained. Watch the edges where a bright area meets a dark one — a horizon, a window frame — because halos appear there first when you overdo it. Ease off local contrast and clarity before they turn gritty, and keep saturation honest. A good test is to ask whether the photo looks like the moment you remember. If it looks like it belongs on a screensaver, dial it back. Done with a light touch, a merged HDR should be almost invisible as a technique; the viewer just sees a well-exposed scene.

When you do and don’t need HDR

HDR is a tool for a specific problem, not a default setting. Most of the time a single RAW file will do the job, because modern sensors already capture a wide range and a bit of shadow-and-highlight recovery in editing covers ordinary contrast comfortably. Reaching for a full bracket when the scene doesn’t need it just adds work and risks the artificial look.

Save true HDR for scenes whose range genuinely exceeds what one exposure can hold. The textbook case is an interior with a bright window: expose for the room and the view outside blows out; expose for the window and the room goes dark. Good subjects for HDR

A few kinds of scene lend themselves to bracketing and blending. Real estate and interiors are the most common, because rooms with windows create exactly the sky-versus-shadow gap HDR was made for. Cityscapes, especially at blue hour, are a third strong candidate: bright building lights, glowing windows, and a darkening sky span a range one frame struggles with, and a careful merge keeps both the lit windows and the deep sky readable. What these subjects share is static content and extreme contrast— the scene holds still long enough to bracket, and its range is wide enough to justify the effort. When both are true, HDR shines. When they’re not, a single well-exposed frame is usually the better choice.

What does HDR mean in photography?

How many exposures do I need for HDR?

Do I need a tripod for HDR photography?

It helps a lot. A tripod keeps every frame in the bracket aligned so the software can merge them cleanly, and it lets you use a low ISO and any aperture without worrying about a slow shutter. You can handhold a bracket if your camera shoots the burst quickly and the software aligns the frames, but a tripod gives you the most reliable result, especially in the low light where HDR is most useful.

Why does HDR sometimes look fake or overcooked?

The unnatural look usually comes from pushing the merge too hard - cranking local contrast and saturation until you get glowing halos around edges, flat grungy midtones, and colors that never existed. It is a processing choice, not a requirement of the technique. Dial the tone mapping back, watch the edges of high-contrast lines for halos, and aim for an image that simply looks like the scene did to your eye.

Is a single RAW file ever enough instead of HDR?

Often, yes. A modern RAW file already holds a lot of tonal latitude, so if a scene's contrast is only moderate you can lift the shadows and pull back the highlights from one exposure and get a natural result with no merging at all.
