How to Photograph Panoramas
Shoot a sequence of frames and stitch them into a huge, high-resolution panorama - the overlap, exposure and stitching workflow that make it seamless.
A panorama is what you get when you shoot a row of overlapping frames and let software stitch them into one very wide image. Done well, it gives you a far wider view and much higher resolution than any single frame could — and it looks nothing like the quick sweep panorama your phone stitches on the fly. The whole thing comes down to a short list of habits: overlap the frames, keep the camera steady and level, lock your settings so nothing shifts between shots, and stitch the results in software. This guide walks through each of those in plain terms so your next panorama comes out seamless.
Why stitch a panorama instead of cropping one frame
The obvious question is why bother taking several frames when you could just crop a single wide shot into a letterbox strip. The answer is resolution. Cropping throws away pixels, so a panorama cut out of one frame ends up small and soft when you print it big. Stitching does the opposite: each frame you add contributes its full resolution, so a five- or six-frame panorama can hold tens of millions more pixels than your camera captures in a single exposure. That is the difference between a web-sized strip and a file you can print several feet wide.
A stitched panorama also beats the sweep panorama your phone makes. Sweep modes record low-resolution video as you pan and smear the result together, which is why they warp straight lines and fall apart when anything moves. Shooting discrete, overlapping frames and stitching them deliberately keeps every pixel sharp and gives you control over how the final image is assembled. Overlap every frame by about a third
The single most important rule is overlap. Stitching software works by finding common points that appear in two neighboring frames and using them to line the frames up. If the frames barely touch, the software has almost nothing to match on and the seam misaligns or the stitch fails outright. Overlap each frame by roughly 30 percent— about a third of the frame shared with its neighbor — and you give the software plenty of anchor points to work with.
Beyond the overlap itself, shoot the sequence steadily and evenly. Pan in one direction, usually left to right, and move by a consistent amount between each frame so the overlap stays even across the whole set. Rushing or jumping unevenly leaves some pairs with too little shared area. It helps to pick out a feature near the right edge of one frame and make sure it sits comfortably inside the left third of the next. A slow, deliberate rhythm beats speed here every time.
Shoot vertical so you keep enough height
It feels backward, but you should turn the camera to portrait orientation— vertical — to shoot a horizontal panorama. Here is why. When the software stitches your frames it almost never lines them up as a perfect rectangle; the top and bottom edges come out ragged and stepped, and you have to crop that mess away. Cropping eats into the height of the finished image, so if you shot in landscape orientation you can be left with a thin, disappointing strip.
Shooting each frame vertically banks extra height for that crop, so the final panorama still has generous top-to-bottom room once the ragged edges are gone. As a bonus, portrait frames cover less width each, which means you take more of them to span the same scene — and more frames means even more resolution in the stitched file. The small extra effort of shooting a longer vertical sequence pays off in both proportions and detail.
Lock exposure, white balance, and focus
If you leave the camera on automatic, it will quietly re-meter every frame and adjust the brightness, and it may shift the color balance too. Point at a bright sky and the frame darkens; swing toward a shaded hillside and it brightens. Stitch those together and you get obvious banding where the tones jump at each seam. The fix is to lock everything down by shooting in manual mode. Meter off an average part of the scene, dial in an aperture, shutter, and ISO that expose it well, and then leave them alone for the entire sequence. Do the same with white balance and focus. Switch white balance off auto and pick a fixed setting so the color stays identical across every frame. For focus, set it once and then lock it: either focus manually, or let autofocus lock onto your subject and then flip the lens or camera to manual so it can’t re-focus and change the framing partway through. With exposure, color, and focus all fixed, every frame is a consistent piece of the same puzzle and the seams disappear.
Keep it level and pivot on the right point
A panorama that isn’t levelcurves like a banana and forces the software to crop away even more of your image to straighten it. Turn on the camera’s built-in electronic level if it has one, and get the horizon flat before you start. The most dependable way to stay level across a long sweep is a tripod with a leveled head, so the camera rotates in a flat plane rather than drifting up or down as you pan.
There is one more subtlety worth knowing when your scene has close foreground: the no-parallax point. If you pivot the camera around the wrong spot, near and far objects shift relative to each other between frames — the same way a finger held up in front of you jumps against the background when you move your head. That parallax makes close foregrounds impossible to stitch cleanly. Rotating around a point roughly under the lens, rather than around the tripod screw at the back of the camera, keeps near and far objects aligned. For distant scenes with no close foreground, parallax barely matters and you can relax about it.
Choosing a lens and shooting handheld
You might assume the widest lens you own is best for a panorama, but the opposite is usually true. Ultra-wide lenses stretch and bend the edges of the frame, and that heavy distortion gives the stitching software a hard time matching overlapping areas. A normal-to-short-telephotofocal length — something in the standard range rather than extreme wide — renders straighter, flatter frames that stitch far more predictably, and because each frame is narrower you naturally capture more detail across the scene.
You don’t always need a tripod, either. Handheld panoramas work well for distant scenes: keep the camera as level as you can, pivot your body on the spot rather than walking sideways, and shoot the sequence quickly with plenty of overlap. Because there is no close foreground, parallax stays small and the software forgives the slight imperfections. Save the tripod for when you have foreground close to the lens, want a dead-level horizon, or are shooting in dim light where a slower shutter would blur a handheld frame.
Stitching and cropping in software
Once you have your frames, the assembly happens on the computer. Most editors do it for you: Lightroom has a photo merge that stitches a selected set in a couple of clicks, Photoshop offers Photomerge with more manual control over how the frames blend, and there are dedicated stitching apps if you shoot panoramas often. Whichever you use, the software aligns your overlapping frames, blends the exposures across the seams, and hands you a single wide image. The last step is dealing with those ragged edges. You can simply crop into the largest clean rectangle, accepting a little lost image at the borders. Many stitching tools also offer a boundary warp slider that gently stretches the edges out to fill the frame, or a content-aware fillthat paints plausible detail into the empty corners so you keep more of your scene. A light touch on either keeps the panorama looking natural; push them too hard and skies or straight lines start to bend.
Common pitfalls to watch for
A few things trip up panoramas even when your technique is solid, and nearly all of them come down to things that move. A person walking through the scene, waves on water, or clouds drifting across the sky can appear in one position in one frame and a different position in the overlap of the next, and the software has to guess how to blend them. The result is ghosting— a half-transparent double image or a chopped-off shape at a seam. Shoot quickly to minimize how far anything moves, and where you can, wait for a lull with fewer moving elements.
Changing lightcauses the same trouble more slowly: if the sun ducks behind a cloud partway through your sequence, the frames won’t match in brightness and you get banding you can’t fully remove. Get the whole set done before the light shifts. Finally, remember that panoramas aren’t only horizontal. For a tall subject like a waterfall, a redwood, or a canyon wall, shoot a vertical panoramainstead — the same overlapping technique rotated 90 degrees — to capture the full height at high resolution.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I overlap each frame in a panorama?
