How to Photograph Reflections
Water, glass, puddles and mirrors - how to find and shoot reflections, when to use a polarizer to control them, and how symmetry turns them into art.
A reflection turns one subject into two and hands you a built-in sense of symmetry, drama, and calm that’s hard to get any other way. The good news is that reflections are everywhere once you start looking — not just on mountain lakes but in puddles, shop windows, wet streets, car paint, and even a pair of sunglasses. This guide covers where to find them, the one habit that makes them sharp, how to use a polarizer to strengthen or kill a reflection at will, and how to expose and focus so the mirror image looks as good as the real thing.
Where to find reflections
The obvious place is still water: a lake, a pond, a slow river, a harbor, or a tidal flat that catches the sky. Those are the postcard reflections, and they’re worth seeking out at dawn or dusk. But the more useful skill is learning to spot reflections in ordinary places. After rain, puddles and wet pavement turn a dull street into a mirror, doubling neon signs, streetlights, and passersby. Glass buildings and windows bounce clouds, skylines, and whatever stands across the street. So do mirrors, polished car paint, and sunglasses. Once you train your eye, you’ll notice that almost any smooth, dark, or shiny surface is a reflection waiting to be framed — and the everyday ones often make the most surprising photos.
The calmer the surface, the sharper the reflection
The single biggest factor in a clean water reflection is wind. Even a light breeze ripples the surface and scatters the mirror image into a soft, broken blur. A dead-calm surface, by contrast, gives you a reflection almost as crisp as the subject itself. That’s why the best time for water reflections is usually early morning, when the air is stillest right after sunrise, or a sheltered pocket of watertucked out of the wind — the lee side of a bank, a cove, or a pond ringed by trees. If the main body of a lake is churning, walk the shoreline and look for a protected inlet where the water goes glassy. Get low to maximize the reflection
The instinct is to shoot a reflection from standing height, but the magic usually happens when you get low — right down to the surface. Dropping the camera close to the water or the wet pavement does two things: it enlarges the reflected area so the mirror image fills more of the frame, and it lines the real subject up more directly with its double, which strengthens the symmetry. For puddle shots this often means putting the camera an inch or two off the ground. A tilting or flip-out screen makes this far easier than trying to lie down and peer through the viewfinder, but the low angle is worth the effort either way. It’s the difference between a snapshot of some water and a photo that reads as a deliberate mirror.
Compose with the reflection line
Every reflection has a reflection line— the waterline or edge where the real scene meets its mirror. Where you place that line decides the whole feel of the shot. Set it on a third, high or low in the frame, when you want the real subject or the reflection to dominate, following the usual rule-of-thirds logic from our composition basics guide. Either way, look for a strong subject worth doubling— a mountain, a city skyline, a lone tree, a glowing sunset, or a person — because a reflection only elevates a scene that was already worth photographing. The polarizer: your reflection control dial
If there’s one tool that changes how you shoot reflections, it’s a polarizing filter. A polarizer screws onto the front of the lens and rotates, and as you turn it you can strengthen or remove reflections and glare. That control cuts both ways. Rotate it one direction to kill the glare on a window so you can see inside, or to cut the sheen off wet leaves and rocks. Rotate it the other way to keep — or deepen — a water reflection so the mirror image stays rich. The one catch is that a polarizer can’t be everywhere at once: it manages reflections at certain angles, so in a busy scene you’re choosing which reflection to control, not all of them. Exposure: the reflection is usually darker
A reflection almost always comes back a touch darker than the real scene it mirrors, because the surface absorbs and scatters some of the light on the way. If you expose only for the bright subject, the reflection can sink into shadow; if you expose for the reflection, the subject can wash out. The reliable fix is to meter for a balance between the two, aiming to keep detail in both halves, or to bracket— shoot a few frames at different exposures — and pick or blend the best one afterward. Shooting RAW helps enormously here, since it leaves you room to lift the darker reflected half in editing without the image falling apart. When the real scene and its mirror are far apart in brightness, bracketing is the safe habit.
Focus: point it where the intent is
Where you focus depends on what you want the viewer to see. If the reflection is the star — an abstract of ripples, or a skyline shimmering in a canal — focus on the reflection. If the real subject carries the image, focus there. It’s worth knowing that a reflection is optically a little farther away than the surface it sits on, so the two aren’t always at the exact same focus distance. When you want both the subject and its reflection sharp, use a smaller aperture, somewhere around f/8 to f/11, to deepen the zone of focus so it comfortably covers both. For a straightforward mirror shot the subject and reflection are usually close enough that a single focus point does the job, but reach for that smaller aperture whenever depth is in doubt.
Get creative with it
Once the basics are second nature, reflections open up a lot of room to play. Drop to puddle levelon a city street and let a small pool carry a whole scene — a building, a person, a bike — flipped and framed by wet asphalt. Move in close for abstracts: ripples breaking a reflection into bands of distorted color, or the warped highlights on a curved car body that read more like a painting than a photograph. Try an intentional flip, turning the image upside down in editing so the reflection becomes the “real” scene and the viewer has to look twice. And save some of your best reflection hunting for blue hour in a wet city, when building lights, signs, and headlights double themselves in the streets — the same doubled color you chase with a long exposure over moving water can appear in a single still puddle after rain.
