How to Photograph the Northern Lights

The aurora appears on nature’s schedule, not yours, in cold and dark places far from streetlights, and the difference between a smeared, muddy frame and a clean, glowing one comes down to a handful of choices you make before you ever press the shutter. The gear that actually matters
You need less than you might think, but the few things you do need are non-negotiable. A wide angle takes in a broad sweep of sky and lets you include the landscape below, while the bright maximum aperture gathers as much of that faint light as possible so you can keep your shutter times and ISO under control. Focusing in the dark
Autofocus needs contrast and light to lock on, and a night sky offers neither, so it will hunt and fail. Switch the lens to manual focusand set it by hand. The reliable method is to find the brightest thing in the sky — a prominent star, the moon, or a distant light on the horizon — turn on live view, and use the camera’s zoom button to magnify that point on the screen as far as it will go. Resist the urge to simply crank the focus ring to its end stop. Planning is half the battle
More than any setting, where and when you stand decides whether you see the aurora at all. Composition: give the aurora a foreground
A sky full of light can still make a strangely empty photograph, because there is nothing to give it scale or a sense of place. The fix is a strong foreground. Anchor the frame with something on the ground — a stand of trees, a jagged ridline, a lone cabin with a lit window, or the edge of a lake — and the aurora suddenly has context and depth. Water is especially rewarding: a calm lake or a slow river will throw a reflection of the glowing sky, doubling the color and drawing the eye down through the frame.
