A lens name looks like a random string of numbers and letters — something like 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN— but every piece is telling you something concrete. Read it left to right and you can walk into any listing and know how wide or zoomed-in the lens is, how much light it gathers, what size filter it takes, which camera it fits, whether it’s stabilized, and how it focuses. How a lens name is built

Almost every lens name follows the same rough order. It opens with the focal length in millimeters, then the maximum aperture as an f/ number, and after that comes a cluster of letters: a format or mount code that says what it fits, sometimes a product-line badge like L or Art, and finally short initials for the stabilization and the autofocus motor. Different brands shuffle the order slightly and use their own abbreviations, but the building blocks are the same everywhere. Focal length: the millimeter number

The number in millimetersis the focal length, and it controls the angle of view — how much of the scene fits in the frame. A smaller number like 16mm or 24mm is wide and takes in a lot at once, which suits landscapes and interiors. A bigger number like 135mm or 200mm is a telephoto that magnifies distant subjects and compresses the background, which suits portraits, wildlife, and sports. Maximum aperture: the f/ number

The f/ numberis the maximum aperture — how much light the lens can gather when it’s open all the way. Two things trip people up here. First, smaller means brighter: an f/1.8 lens lets in far more light than an f/5.6 lens, and it also gives you a shallower, more blurred background. Second, whether the number is single or a pair tells you a lot. A single value like f/1.8 or f/2.8 is a constant aperture— on a zoom, it stays that bright no matter how far you zoom. A pair like f/3.5-5.6 is a variable aperturezoom: it opens to f/3.5 at the wide end but dims to f/5.6 as you zoom in. Constant aperture lenses cost more and weigh more; variable aperture zooms are the lighter, cheaper kit-lens norm. Filter thread size

Somewhere on the front ring, or printed inside the lens cap, you’ll find a small circle with a line through it— the diameter symbol — followed by a number in millimeters. That number is the filter thread size, the diameter of the threads on the front of the lens. It tells you what size screw-in filter and what size front cap fit: a lens marked 67 needs a 67mm polarizer, a 67mm ND filter, and a 67mm cap. Common sizes run 49, 52, 58, 62, 67, 72, 77, and 82mm. The key thing to remember is that this number has nothing to do with focal length or aperture— it’s purely the physical size of the front. Two wildly different lenses can share a filter size, and two similar-looking lenses can take different ones, so always check the number rather than assuming.

Format and mount codes

This is the cluster that decides whether the lens will even fit and cover your sensor, so it’s the one to get right before you buy. The letters name both the mount and the sensor format the lens is designed for. On Sony, FE is full-frame E-mount and E on its own is APS-C E-mount. On Canon, RF is full-frame and RF-S is APS-C on the same mirrorless mount, while the older DSLR world used EF and EF-S the same way. Nikon marks its APS-C lenses DX and leaves its full-frame lenses unlabeled. Among third parties, Sigma uses DC for APS-C and DG for full-frame, with DN meaning a design built for mirrorless; Tamron uses Di variants the same way. Fujifilm uses XF and XC for its APS-C X-mount. Stabilization and autofocus letters

Two short sets of initials near the end of the name describe features rather than fit. The first is image stabilization, the in-lens system that steadies small shakes so you can shoot at slower shutter speeds. Every brand has its own label for the same idea: Sony calls it OSS (Optical SteadyShot), Canon IS (Image Stabilizer), Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction), and Sigma and Tamron use OS and VC. If those letters are present, the lens is stabilized; if they’re absent, it isn’t — though many mirrorless bodies stabilize in the camera instead.

The second set names the autofocus motor. Canon’s STMis a quiet, smooth stepping motor that’s friendly for video, while USM (ultrasonic motor) is typically faster for stills and Nano USM aims to do both. Sigma labels its ultrasonic motor HSM, and many newer mirrorless lenses use compact stepping or linear motors that arrived with the DNera. Premium tiers, macro, and generations

A few remaining badges tell you where a lens sits in its maker’s range. Canon’s L (with its red ring) marks the professional tier; Sony uses G and, at the top, GM(G Master); and Nikon’s mirrorless flagships wear an S. Sigma sorts its lenses into Art, Contemporary, and Sports lines. The word Macro means the lens can focus close enough for genuine close-up work, and APO flags apochromatic glass built to cut color fringing. Finally, a Roman numeral or the word Mark II, III, or Mark II — is a generation number, telling you it’s the second or third version of that design, usually an update to an earlier lens with the same focal length and aperture.
